To sum it up, there is still a lot of work to do but the main building blocks are there! Unfortunately, in order to fully embrace this new OS, I had to raise the minimal version on which Hopper is able to run. I expect to release an update of the current version which includes the handling of these modifications. Some of these changes are now handled by Hopper but not all of them yet. Also, the system frameworks are not stored in the same way as before, but rather in a shared cache almost like iOS. For instance, there is a new way of referencing Objective-C selectors in the executable metadata which forces me to rewrite a lot of things. MacOS Big Sur changes a lot of things under the hood. Today, I’m happy to announce that Hopper will fully support macOS Big Sur and Apple Silicon CPU! I have received a Developer Transition Kit from Apple a few weeks ago, and I’ve started to work on supporting the ARM architecture. But in the case of Hopper, the architecture on which it runs means a lot! The main issue is, of course, the debugger which heavily depends on the underlying architecture. Most transition went fine and I’ve no doubt that Apple will provide a nice transition to the ARM / Apple Silicon architecture.įor most applications, the transition will be transparent, even if the code has been written for the Intel architecture. I owned a Macintosh with a Motorola CPU back in the day, and after that a PowerPC G3, followed by many Intel-based Macintoshes. This is a very exciting move and I really hope that it will be for the best. ![]() Recently, Apple announced their transition to a new architecture for the Macintosh product line. Some of you thought that the project was dead, but this is clearly not the case! I continued to release many updates, approximately every other week, bringing new features and bug fixes. ![]() It has been a while since I last wrote something on this blog. It means that all customers will get access to the updates for free until October 30, 2021. This free year is automatically assigned to everyone’s license, and starts at the publication of this message. This is why I’ve also decided to offer a one-year update plan for free to everyone who already has a v3 / v4 license. Like I said earlier, I’m very thankful to the customers who trusted me all those years. I’ll also put a page on the website in order to consult the status of a license, and purchase updates if needed. Today, all those mechanisms have been implemented in the application, and for instance, you can get your update plan expiry date from the About dialog box. ![]() I’ll offer a way to purchase additional years at a discounted price. You don’t need to keep a running update plan to make it work. It means that if you purchase a license today, you’ll receive EVERY update for one full year.īut this is NOT a subscription If you decide to purchase a license, it will always be usable even after the year is over. This is why I have recently decided to change how the future versions of Hopper will be distributed: starting with this new version, every purchase of a license will include a one year update plan. That being said, Hopper is targeting a very small niche, and if I want to make my work sustainable, I need to adjust my commercial policy. I want to thank every customer who chose to support my work by purchasing a license! A big thanks to all of you! And all this has been given for free! In fact, even customers of versions 3.x from February 2014 have received those updates for free, which is almost 7 years of free updates and continuous improvement. If you compare the current version to the one released four years ago, you’ll be able to measure how much work, and love, have been put into this application. To be even more precise, I’ve released 134 versions over the past four years! Since then, it has received many updates and a lot of improvements. Hopper Disassembler v4.0.0 was released four years ago, in November 2016. Also, the Linux version is slightly delayed, and will be available as soon as possible. Unfortunately, like I mentioned in my previous post, I had to remove support for older version of macOS this is why the minimum requirement is now macOS High Sierra 10.13. I’m really pleased to announce that Hopper Disassembler for Apple Silicon is now available! As always, it also includes many enhancements and fixes.
